coz there's an incidence in a coincidence.
yesterday was a great day. for one we actualy got out of training on the weekend. i pity the other groups, that havent been able to do. there is sometimes power in small numbers. neway that was enough to lift my spirits. but what made it nicer was meeting a friend that i hadnt met since high school. it was so surreal. i mean of all the places to meet them i met them in times square.(and ive been cribbing about the fact that i cant walk there anymore) and while we were having the "omigod is it really you" moment her sisters were taping the whole thing. made me a little self concious but it was really nice and later on when i met up other friends for dinner, my excitement hadnt worn off.
it really is a small world.
yesterdays highlights included finally eating at a french restaurant. im a bit disappointed that the menu wasnt in french. how unauthentic at that. but the fact that it had weird enough items on the menu, liver mousse, gapazalo (sp!). it was enough to redeem itself. im not so much an experimenter on these things, but my friend who had it really liked the "weird" dishes.
the movie of the week now, chucky and larry. seriously pathetic movie. its not funny. the humor is really crude. and i cant understand how girls would fall for adam sandler who is supposed to be a "ladies man". in other news, the theatre we went to watch is in time square and it had black out. there was no one to guide us out, i mean sure there are exit signs, but it could have caused a major stampede. and then later on many of us were exiting via the escalators rather than the stairs. coz we didnt want to be alone in the dark if the light in the stairway went out. i was really scared that anymoment now someone is going to fall from behind and its going to cause a stampede. im shocked that such a popular place is leeking of safety hazards.
dont watch this movie. only rent it if you love the sitcom guy.

pride and prejudice...
there is a certain tranquility with being in the office alone. and where you can actually think outloud and curse when something isnt going rite. or that piece of damning code is just not doing what its supposed to and instead of backtracking you become the amateur cook and keep adding things hoping it will fall into place.
it never does.
well anyway, in the list of firsts this was the first nite i stayed late at work. only to discover that what i was working on was a total waste of time. sad, i know. and somehow word got around that the new hire is putting in late hours and my boss said after 9 i should take car service home. thats really nice! but i prefer the walk home since its my time for myself. apparently we've been advised not to abuse this service too, similar to staying late every nite and ordering dinner on the company account. ive never ever done that and i dont htink i will either unless its a whole team who stays late and is ordering in. theres a fine line between ethical and pure greed.
ok maybe thats too harsh of words. but my story with locksmiths in the city is just that. multiply everything by four times when you live here in the city. it is that expensive. but these guys take full advantage of the fact that not only you are in the city but that you are in a despearate situation, as my neighbour said pple will do anyting to get into their appartments. ok backtrack. i closed my door without realizing my keys were still inside. and initially they advertise on the phone a small fee + labour. and since you wouldnt really think the fee is greater than the labour charge, i agreed. i was so wrong. its highly inflated. its more costly than going to a doctor's. learnt a really costly lesson and will be so much more careful now.
theres a certain bias with pple who are scared of dogs here. i was told off by some guy walking his dog, when i moved away. "its only a dog not a dinosaur". No way. "i wear glasses, doesnt mean im blind". ok i didnt say that, but i wanted to.
im sorry, im scared. i just am. call it a genetically mutated dog fearing gene or cultural bias, but i am. and when a really grumpy looking dog shits on the road. i cringe. i consider that a freedom of my expression. im allowed to be grossed out. i would do the same if it were human, ant or even plant. anyone elses stuff apart from your own grosses the other. but pple will be like why you being mean about my dog. touchy. jeez.
well neway some highlights of work, the close proximity to barnes and nobles. my lunch breaks, when i take it that is, is spent reading. my mood dictates what i read its always interesting to see what others are reading. the students mostly magazines and mostly sitting near the areas where they particularly say not to read magazines. hehe. older pple usually travel books or poetry books. and theres always one person in the historical romances. quite a few pple in the management/finance section. this is always a good thing. i would imagine if you are a writer, which there are quite a few of, the saddest thing would be if no one ever reads what you wrote. but such is life and one tends to read the ones which are most advertised. ive been reading this book called "liar's poker", which i shall review once im done. i read this really interesting book on converted muslims (mostly women) and how their parents come to terms with it. i wonder if majority of converted muslims are women? or any religion for that matter, are most converts women? then i read this book which was general knowledge when you are in the loo. and despite having read most of it i can only remember that mosquitoes tend to bite children more than adults. hmm, no wonder. i shouldve known.

coz we belong on different planets!
so on a whim we decided to go for a broadway play. the play in question being 'I love you, you're perfect but you have to change'. It showcased the whole western dating ritual and the progression from singlehood to coupledom and how irritating some couples can be with their lovey doveyness or how smug coupledom can make you or how sometimes you really have no compatibility with someone but everyone else is making decisions for you. and how you will do something for someone and then remind them a gazillion times that you are doing it for them, thereby negating the one thing cthat you did. LOL. then theres parenthood and the taking for granted factor and how the 'us' gets lost in the 'they'/'them' (kids). then theres spoofs on how counseling ads for couples are all bogus. and then regular fare like commitment issues, girls shopping gene, girls obssesed with her weight gene, boys lieing-on-the-couch-watching-tv-no-muscle-moving-all-day gene. or how the same things that yo used to like about the person irritate u. familiarity breeds contempt.
all in all quite stereotypical but quite entertaining. the only thing was im not sure why they are short of cash since the tickets are quite pricey and at least half the theatre was full, but the sets were bland and they had few props, not to mention four actors and 2 musicians. total low budget play.
one of the interesting scenes in the play was when the couple is now old and after 30 years of marriage, the guy is thinking that why hes not with someone else and why he married the person and why he didnt cheat on her etc...and i never understood that.. is he thinking that he didnt coz he truly loves the person or is he apsosing (regretting) that he should have.
sometimes i think pple are caught up in this whole bookish sense of love, that they wouldnt understand a good thing or even a bad thing. and if everything is smooth sailing, someone has to cause the tide to rise. for no reason. just for the sake of it. thats just human nature i believe.
and heres one of my fave scenes from a cult movie summing up my rambling above. majorly paraphrased
preity: wat rubbish, main sameer sei kabhi nahin sawal poochti hoon na jawab mangti hoon ( wat rubbish, i dont ask sameer any questions, nor do i ask for an answer)
akash: magar woh poochta hai. main nahin kehta that ghalti hamesha larki ki hoti hai.
(but he asks. i dont say that its always the girls fault, it could be the guys too)

are u indefinetly indefinite?
so the movie of the week, which i actually trekked down to get from jackson heights (major desi hub). actually its not that far and i didnt trek, (figurative speech) i just took the train. so neway first ill explain the jackson height experience. kabab king probably has the greatest desi food in new york region but they really should have some kind of warning label on the food : something on the lines of after effects include bad bowel movements and acidity. but neway despite the "what-do-u-want-we-dont-have-all-day" server guys, it was pretty ok. other than that its a run down version of linking road in Mumbai or Karama in Dubai. everything apart from food is bad quality. they also have a huge desi store which is aptly named patel brothers and is run by sardars. hahaah. who typically are like bouncers in front of a supermarket making sure you arent stealing something or giving u weird looks coz you arent buying anything.
and if anyone has seen ta ra rum pum, im trying to remember if they actually shot that in jackson heights. they may have. which reminds me that the movie kept referring to "jab sapna tut ta hai new york mein, tab ek cab driver banta hai". when a dream breaks in new york, a cab driver is born. perhaps this will have reverse effects given the news that someone sold their taxi cab medallion for 600,000 USD.
shocking, rite? there is power in numbers.
so now to the movie bheja fry. its one of the starts of as what the hell is going on and then goes on to be whats the point. its still watchable though, and far better than the kya love story hais of the day.

meri raahein alvida...
so ive blogged about advertisements before, but american ads never fail to suprise me. in dubai and even in ads in india, you cant really point to the competitor's product and say that its bad. a more generic ad comes to mind, some detergent is compared with the competitors. The competitor's detergentlabel is usually blacked out, so as not to offend or to take panga with the other company.
i dont agree with the competitive form of advertising, but i do think it can make the consumer think about alternatives. im guessing in 10 years, its going to be so simple, you will probably go into a store and the price tag will not only tell you what the item costs, but what the stores down the road are charging for it.
moving track, i absolutely adore my boss. i truly think i lucked out. and this isnt a coz you have to like your boss thing its true. everyone in the group has only good things to say about him, everyone wants to ask him questions and everyone takes his opinion and even when pple are behaving like know-it-alls, he is calm and confident. Thank God for great bosses.

ask a stupid question...
at chinatown yest afternoon.
lady*quietly to mom*: for you, i give this watch for 30.
mom: 30, kuch zyada nahin hai. H, cho inkei kam kar (isnt it a lot for 30, tell her to do less)
me *since im the bargaining queen*: how about 15?
lady *staring at me like ive turned into a rabbit*: 15, i charge just to look only.
and get a stupid(er) answer....
few moments later:
me: ok how about 16? come on give it, we want to "buy" it (as opposed to pple who just pay the money and take the watch)
lady*considering i think*: NO.
me and mom *pretending to walk away*
lady: Ok 25
me looking back and now really really walking away: 18?
lady: Ok 20 last.
me: Ok done.
mom *looking at the watch again*: its not that nice.i dont like it.
me and lady: WTH.

"Decide that you want it more, than you are afraid of it." - Bill Cosby
So the guest speaker at the graduation cermony was the above. I have to say it was far far more inspiring than the Dean's lecture or Michael Dell's lecture when I was graduating from undergrad. Dell's lecture was more like:
hey-i-dropped-out-of-school-developed-this-idea-in-my-dorm-made-millions-while-u-did-midterms-and-now-we-are-developing-so-n-so-blah-blah-blah-buy-dell-kids. and -watever-stay-in-school-and-get-a-education. dont do what i did.
yea rite. neway I still think Michael Dell is a nice guy. based on his speech. (i dont knwo much about him) i think not only was he smart. he took the risk and got lucky.
Anyway Cosby was really funny and the Deans from all the colleges were super intimidated by him. I think it takes a lot of guts and a whole lot more to give a speech but all the more if you are meaning to be entertaining and funny. The poor undergrad speaker was booed by quite a few of the arts students.
neway the whole gist of his speech was "embrace nerdhood". haha. kidding.
the whole gist was if you fail, you try and you try harder. and you be yourself and if you are a nerd, be happy coz thats what you are. and the best part of his speech it wasnt cliched the typical story where you fail once and then go out and do your best. there are times where you keep doing bad and totally lose your self esteem. he even made a joke of this, saying if this werea movie he would have done his best. but "sadly" life isnt a movie. there are no retakes and no should've/could have/would have/ just.. have has and will . he got a standing ovation at the end and a honorary doctoral degree.
anyway hardly anyone showed up for the graduation. i cant believe pple would miss their own graduation. and that too for reasons that are kinda dumb. "im tired", "who is going to travel 2 hours in an air conditioned plane". you thats who. maybe its just me. maybe its a stupid thing. perhaps there is no need to define redefine each and every important thing in your life. but most of my family made it to my graduation. and sure at that moment nothings going rite. its too hot. its too cold. theres no decent place to eat. everyone is cranky sleepy and tired. you have to wake up early. and as Cosby says you cant really please everyone. but despite all that, when you look back over this time, you only remember the good things. and you miss that time that you spent together. theres nothing like family.
neway moving on. on the lines of subtle jokes, cheeni kum is an excellent movie. at first, i was a bit hesitant to watch it. but the promos looked quite funny. and it really is. its one of those sarcastic, bitter sweet kind of movies. without the whole emotional melodrama. i really liked it. the dialogues are the best. very rarely do you have witty hindi movies. its got the typical love story but in a not so typical way with a strange pair. but its believable. the problems are believable. the parental hungama that is common nowadays is there too. all in all a must see.
to be contd..

dilli walei barei sayanei.
so we ended up watching many hindi movies this week, i wanted to watch life in a metro too but no one was that enthu to see it. the movies in question firstly : kya love story hai. after watching the movie you really do say that, but you want to add the word bakwas after the kya. =). neway i thought ayesha takia did a good job, but she has put on tons of weight that im so sure she was hiding her paunch in every scene. it sucks to be fat if you are an actor. neway, besides that i have absolutely no words for the new hero and tushar kappoor. yes, they were THAT bad.
then theres delhi heights, which could have been a great movie. but sadly wasnt. and i really cant stand jimmy shergills hair color. guys shouldnt dye their hair. any color. anyway, it has great great songs, despite the weirdness of rabbi shergill making ghost like appearances in some songs. i really didnt get that, i mean was he supposed to be a ghost or an angel or liek some fictitious character that just sings the background.
anyway the movie turns out like when you put every single great ingredient in a dish and you end up with something that sucks. or like when you put every single thing and you forget the salt.
speaking of which, not enough frying of onions leads to terrible food. and ive been really lucky that i had my sister to remedy the damage.
neway the week though taxing at times was really constructive and in retrospect fun and eventful and I have seen quite a few palces in new york in a short while. from statue of liberty which is quite awe inspiring to chinatown where we went all crazy at the mention of "2 for 10 bucks." or everything for "2/1 bucks"
the sad thing is that the market has been made so cheap that its embarassing to even bargain. or rather its taking the fun out of baragaining. many of the salesmen would make a face at us when we would bargain and if they succumbed it would be really grudgingly and they would try to get us out of the store as quick as possible.and some wont even budge a dollar. but desis that we are, we are so chikna-gara. and like russel peters says (paraphrased) "desis and chinese just cant to business with each other". well, the way i see it bargaining is fun for both pple involved, its fun for you coz you think youve got a great deal, and its fun for the salesperson coz they think you think theyve given you a great deal but they actually havent.
alrite, fine. i dont make much sense.
moving on. then there was jackson heights, predominantly desi area, which is so rundown its unbelievable. they can really do the places up nicely but they dont want to. im so positive that the food there is great but its very unclean that you would have to choose between a bad stomach or good food. and food is really cheap, even groceries and where else can you get a 24 hour halal meat store. but the sadness is its so unhygenic. forget food, the clothes are outdated and are super overpriced probably thrice as much as you would get in india and even dubai. i really wonder how these retail shops do business.
on the other end of the spectrum theres 5th ave , we went into tiffanys (supposedly the most expensive diamond store), there were more lookers than buyers obviously. but everyone was so unimpressed, and it was a stated fact that we have no kadar (respect) of our shiny great sparkling 24 karat jewelery shops in dubai. sad.
i still want a tiffany ring, though. LOL. no, not really.
theres always something inspriting about trump tower. theres really nothing to see there apart from having a coffee at starbucks or having dinner at the trump bar or something like that. its nice that he leaves it open to the public. and im not really a fan of donald trump or anything but its just nice to see someone who has seen the high life then lost quite a bit and then made it again.
to be continued..

in dinon keh raha dil mera, tuuuuuu khwab saja
ok so now im getting used to categorizing the events of the day. the bad, the good and the blah. since ive decided to be more optimistic im restricting this to the good and the blah only. this again is subjective.
the good:
i deserve three pats on the back today. one for each furniture i assembled. that too by myself. solo mission. you get so lazy back home coz everything comes assembled,(instructions. wat instructions??) or for a small small price you can get it assembled. i tried to get someone to assemble it for me here but it was coming up to twice what my furniture cost! so desi that i am, i decided this is not rocket science, i can do this. and i did. yayyy
so wat else? getting a free ride on the bus. thanks to my 32-tooth smile. =)
the blah:
i promised myself i would get to know everyone on my floor, coz its always good to know your neighbours (i.e i can always leave my potted plant, and future goldfish with them when im away). this of course isnt a great thing always, coz sadly the walls here are very thin if someone sneezes in the next room you can hear it. so if you are having a yelling match with your sibling or whoever. your neighbours know its you coz they know how you sound like. if they dont know you, well then they can keep guessing if it was you or not.
so ive gotten to know two, theres E who when talking to me never really looks at me and i dont think shes really listening to what im saying. their shoes are always outside their apt and they are of various sizes but ive never seen anyone else apart from her living there. hmmmm, mystery.
then theres L who reminds me of this comic character called Luanne. i dont know why, she just does. i think shes irish coz she seems to have a lot of irish-y things outside her apartment, either that or shes really into St. patricks day. and for some reason she keeps calling me Wendy! in no way do i look like a wendy and my name does not even sound remotely close to that!
laundermats in nyc. bahhhhhhhhhh. so i was tricked into thinking that i have a laundry room in my building. never trust anyone, unless you see it with your own eyes. so now i have to go acroos the street to do dmy laundry. my friends think im being a big baby (read loser) and that i should just give it to the chinese laundermat downstairs to do it. hell, even the chinese laundry woman thinks im a procrastinator. i, personally think she should be a marketing specialist. these were her exact words. "time is money, we save you time and money. u want to save both rite? ".i just feel weird letting someone else do it. or rather a stranger do it. i guess time will tell whether i shall succumb to convenience (read : laziness).

yei baatein purani hai jo mujhko sunahni hai..
last week i attended a local koran reading group. the crowd consisting of mostly expat ladies who moved to the US. basically we read the koran and listen to the translation and then have a discussion on something that we dont understand. sometimes when youa re listening to these translations, there are parts which make you feel scared and guilty. scared more on the parts of hell. thats always been a controversial topic. im more of the believer that the Hell is your conscious that will torment you not so much the physical burning fire Hell. but then thats just my opinion and perhaps the making myself feel better thing.
the other controversial topics was when someone started talking about polygamous situations in Islam. The Koran discourages this to the extent where they say its not possible to treat everyone equally and provide for everyone the same. Then some lady in the group was like but men are men and if its in the shariat we accept it and hope God makes our heart big enough to allow our husbands to take another wife. at that statement my eyes popped out, i would never allow it! the times were then different pple were fighting wars it wasnt an organized society like now. you cant equate the times. and plus there were reasons for the Prophet to do so. it wasnt coz men are men!! neways at least these discussions bring about so many pples views together and we at least agree to disagree.
update: my sister told me about todays class and this is how it went.
same lady who made the above mad statement was like we should not think of materialistic things and look beyond that and then goes as far as to say everyone think when you go back home and look at your most precious thing. she answers the question herself and goes its our own kids (way off tangent but i guess family comes under "things") which are the most dear and most precious to us. and everyone is nodding in agreement
then looking at my sister she goes those who dont have kids, its probably your jewelery and clothes. my sister goes err NO its my husband! theres a huge silence in the room and everyone is looking embarassed and then the lady goes "err yea that too". LOL. that too.

so this is going to be a really random post. like dory in finding nemo. some happy, some blah and some not so happy stories.
thumbs up event of the week:
during lunch with some friends someone said that on this small island called manhattan there are about 7000 restaurants and would approximately take you 10 years to visit every one of them .wow. last week, i had dessert at this really nice chocolate place called max brenner, there was a 45 minute wait line at 10 at nite! needless to say it was totally worth it. we ordered the chocolate fondue thing ( roast marshmallows/cut fruit on the fire and dip in diff kind of chocolate). but the embarassing thing was the fire kept rising, im not sure why it was doing that, finally we got really scared that we would burn the place up so we called the waitress who gave us the u-guys-are-so-stupid look and in one motion poured water on it. end of dessert.
moving on the namesake directed by mira nair is pretty good. its one of the first crossover movies that i acutally liked. tabu and irfan khan as the parents are great. kal penn is just ok. i suppose the story line is very similar to the lifestyle of a lot of the second generation desis living here. i just wish it had a better (read happier) ending.
blah events of the week:
traveling in grey hound.(bus service through diff states) my family is always so scared when i travel through greyhound. i guess to a certain extent its not that safe and it usually stinks (a lot). the bus is always 1/3 ful of students and then there is always one or two random desi uncle aunties on the bus. so its not thaaaat bad. and plus its affordable especially for pple like me who "live on the edge" (i.e late lateeefs). philly downtown where the grey hound hub is located is extremely dangerous, and ive heard stories of a few muggings et al. but since we always try and look at the silver lining, where else can you talk about financial matters and have a conversation about wireless service providers with a bum.
next blah event. the movie : ta ra rum pum pum. first of all the title is just neverending its like pronouncing icicicicici bank. so whoever thought they were being smart naming this movie, ive got news for them they were NOT.
ok bad comeback.
the songs suck. and are just random just liek many of the dialogues in the movie. dialogues that are supposed to be touching or serious, made us crack up like anything. there are so many loopholes in the movie its unbelievable, kids taking a shower in a fountain in central park, coz they HAVE to take a shower and theres no water in their bathroom. (can u imagine dogs swim in that fountain regularly...ewwww just ewwww) , making queens seem like a horrendous area to stay in. i dont think too many pple will be happy aobut this, especially considering its the population that stays in that area that will be watching this movie. and then there's NASCAR which is supposedly filled with desis. im so sure in reality this is totally the opposite. and who calls their kids champ and princess? even the queen doesnt call her grandsons prince! then theres a lot of namedropping in the movie, thanks to the sponsors, tiffanys, castro oil etc. anyway final verdict the movie is so random. overall its ok. some parts arent bad and i guess its better than the regular fare thats been out lately. the director's first movie salaam namaste was far better. for the silver lining now: it does have a kind of positive message i.e dont waste money. watch it if you have nothing better to do. and dont expect anything original too.
not so happy event of the week:
kmart(dept store) in union square is hugely overpriced and has really bad quality stuff. but since beggars cant really be choosers, i had to buy the essentials from there. its mostly all martha stewart stuff. (no comment watsoever)my next venue coming up: chinatown. lets see hwo that goes.
well neway while i was shopping this guy comes up to me, while im looking at the iron boards section and is like hey are you getting bored(board). i had my headphones on so didnt hear it the first time, he repeated his statement and was like "are u getting bored..board? get it? its a joke". i smiled my okay-and-ure-point-is-smile. and then he goes maam have u gotten this red ribbon. which is the aids awareness day ribbon worn sometime in december. so anyway i go no and then he goes "we hand these out so that pple can support pple like us who have aids".
now i know aids cannot spread through a conversation but i was shit scared. i know it stupid. im blaming it on Dubai/ the Gulf. most kids there are very protected. i remember once a drug addict had come to the clinic and my dad kicked us all kids out of the clinic so we wouldnt see how a drug addict looks like. needless to say, i still cant make out how one looks like.
anyway, so i know it was stupid for me to be scared, but i was. and i did take the ribbon he was giving out, but i didnt hold it for more than a second and i quickly gave the guy some cash so he would go away. after i did it, i felt really guilty. when you have something like advanced stage cancer that happens idiopathically and then on the other hand you have something like aids which i believe in most cases is caused coz of ones own behavior ( i dont mean small kids who are infected by the virus), i tend to judge the person and despite knowing about the misconceptions of aids i still think otherwise. and i know its not right. i know in both cases the person knows they are going to die soon. this slow death in itself is a big punishment. everyone knows one day they will die, but its worse when you know that its going to happen soon. and i think pple like me who judge the other make it even more worse. shouldnt be so small hearted.

"Life is a succession of moments. To live each one is to succeed"-Kent
ive started getting used to the sounds and sights of manhattan. the nicest thing about my studio is that it has two huge oversized windows and from the fifth floor of my five storey bldg I can look out at the high rises. I often wonder when Im about to fall asleep, this habit of mine from when I was young, I often wonder when I look at the lights on in the apts of a high rise building. Is the person just returning home from work? Is another working on a project deadline? Is it a kid whose just scared to sleep in the dark? Is it a couple cooking a late night dinner? is it a parent helping their child complete a school project? is it a couple talking to each other about everything and nothing in particular? is it someone who started reading a book that they just cant put down? is it someone watching the daily show?
often during these wonderments (spelling!) I fall asleep oblivious to the traffic noise. the same noise that would wake me up at 3 in the morning has become like one of those familiar sounds at home like a sibling snoring, like the buzzing sound of the insect repelling machine, like refridgerator noises, like the sound of water running from our aquarium, or like creaking furniture. all without which it would be too too quiet and would take longer to fall asleep.
"These are hard times for dreamers" - Amelie
i was reading yesterday at barnes and nobles (book store) on the upper east side and this was a conversation that took place.
*an elderly lady trying to pass a boy perhaps aged 15 or so in the aisle*
lady: excuse me
*boy moves out of the way*
lady: what are you reading?
boy: actors handbook
another person who i couldnt see : hes going to be the next sidney poitier
lady: *smiles almost a little sadly* well, hes certainly studying for it
Hard, but not impossible no?

Avval akhar aap nu jana (The beginning or the end I know just the self)
u know how u make your mind after so much confusion and once you are ready to take the plunge, something else happens. this has been my state of mind for buying furniture for my place and most importantly buying my first biggest possession of my life (that would be a car for most pple or a house for others for me its *dramatic silence* a TV). pretty sad, i know. i am one of those weird kids who never had a TV in her house in all her undergrad years and her graduate year. and frankly i have never needed one. i didnt have the time to even watch tv. well not so much time, rather never had the urge to. this of course is the total opposite when im at home and im usually flipping through channels deciding wat to watch and end up watching a quarter of everything. i know, irritating habit. and i dont know if this just happens to me, but usually when i want to see something everyone else wants to watch TV. or when im watching something good every channel has something good to watch. so u cant make up ure mind. but when you want to actually watch TV, theres nothing good to watch on ALL channels. ok, maybe its just me.
well neway, after doing many a research (i.e googling) i zero in one TV. but as luck would have it, its out of stock at the store. and this was after trying to get an employee to talk to me for an hour or so. i think the bestbuy store at least here in nyc is very badly managed, they have a gazillion pple in random things like dvds
(pls tell me who has questions about DVDs!!. u either like the movie or NOT.) but there are just like two pple in the whole of the TV section. and although i was first in line, they decided to service these 3 men in suits. just coz they looked like they would buy a lot. i think they were buying for the lobby of their office and they zeroed in on ONE 32 inch tv. so i went online coz they didnt have the tv and the website has so many broken links. and they dont even pick up their hotline. (the apt name would be superslowline) and u kno when they have a survey on their website,(which no one ever fills) but iw as by then so frustrated that i actualy filled it out and marked them low for everything. my elder brother in law swears by best buy and for him its the equivalent to what toys r us is for kids. well neway, when i asked them about wall mounting the TV, they dont even mention that its going to cost you $350 for installation service. and since im such a gulfie (born and brought up in the gulf), we are so spoon fed and things like wall mounting is free is a given. or at the most 15 bucks. so i naturally translate that everywhere. must remember no free lunches or good deals. only good bad deals.

apnei bhi dil mein basaye huei kuch iradei hai..dil kei bhi kis hi konei mein bhi kuch aisei hi vadei hai.
a conversation between me and umm..i guess me again.
me 1: why do you have so much junk? what are you going to do with these?
*this being elephant sized paper weights, a small quite obviously chipped statue of smiling buddha, an alarm clock with no back cover so basically doesnt work, 500 bundles of tape, four can openers! (and this is when i make it a point to buy things that have a removable cap, that can easily be pulled using your fingers rather than having to use a can opener) .. etc* ( i have a huge list)basically useless small things that have no use but look good or rather looked good and now just add to my never ending clutter.
me 2: i dont know im just saving it for a rainy day?
me 1: sure, coz tape is going to be scarce in the near future. and coz buying more can openers will threaten the cans to open up by themselves. you DO need to use them. not just buy them.why did you buy all this?
me 2: i dont know. i guess i forget that i already have these things.
me 1: ure pathetic. and why do you have all these receipts from ali baba kei zamenei ki.
me 2: ummm u never know, someone might have charged me more than they should or i might want to return something. u never know
me 1: arghhh..well theres more chances of rain in july in dubai than that ever happening. coz you prob will never find the receipt when you need it.
me 1: and now WHAT is this? (This being a scruffy looking stuffed animal thats been buried in the bottom of my box, im chucking this out! and this, (this being a torn shirt with two teeny tiny holes )but is the most comfortable shirt to sleep in)
me 2: noooooo. too many memories attached to those. i give up, im not going to throw anything.
heres to moving in and accumulating more junk!

but we're never gonna survive....unless we get a little crazy
ok so one of the major things that have been on my mind is not work but furniture. when you are setting up your own place you are allowed to go as mad as you want and become as creative as you want of course within your own budget. of course this is adding constant pressure on urself coz you really do want to find the perfect chair, the perfect table and not only do you want it, but you want it cheap too. and as previously explained there are no arbitrage opportunities.
well anyway i bought a rug for my living room/bedroom/study (all 3 in one) (refer to below pigeon hole story). i went pretty mad and drove the sales person mad too. but he obliged me and beared all my nakhras. after i went home, i opened it and flattened it out and didnt like it. and went back immediately. he wasnt least bit surprised to see me, in fact looked positively happy like he expected me to return for the other rug that i was confused about. then we discussed the rugs and thank God i liked the second one better, or it would have been embarassing to return back with the same rug.
i always tend to ask the sales person their opinion. i guess i need the reassurance that im doing the "right" thing. more often than not they point me towards the more expensive one, and sometimes they have really bad taste which i would immediately veto. despite all that i always try and ask someone their opinion. especially if its an expensive thing. so i can always blame the sales person if no one likes it. hahah. just kidding.
so neway heres something else ive noticed. neighbourhoods change by the street. i.e within a few steps. one can be living in a really good safe neighbourhood and in the next block the area is quite dicey and isnt as safe. the outer look of a building may be horrendous and look like its from the 1920's but when you walk inside its almost as if you are in a hotel. im not kidding. when i was looking for apts, the broker showed me a studio in the five story walkup building where the chairman of a big bank lives. and apparently hes renting too. why in the world will someone with so much money rent? they can just buy the whole building! when i asked that, the broker was like oh they are smart they dont want to waste their money on a crap building!! so basically its crappy to buy but its OK to live in! weirdd..
neway manhtattan reminds me so much of mumbai in many ways. in dubai not many rich people will take the bus but here there are a lot of well off people here who take the bus. its very interesting to see these extremes live so close together and for the most part they get along.
other observations: small family owned businesses like restaurants thrive in manhattan, there is almost an unsaid rejection of bigger chain like restaurnts like cheesecake factory or bigger firms like a walmart and target. (major departmental stores). and of course with family owned business comes bargaining, you can bargain a lot here. you also tend to pay a lot for convenience, its evident that regular household things would cost more in a smaller shop than say a huge departmental store (coz of the whole buying in bulk reducing cost thing).
but strangely enough this extends to food and groceries too. the same newspaper in my neighbouhood convenience store costs more than the same newspaper in the subway. this is a first for me, in dubai certain things (bread, eggs, milk etc) have the same price throughout the country. should their not be a control on this??
but like many a places and among all the age groups one thing remains constant. the increasing number of happy faces when today was declared a good friday and most pple had half day off. some kids on my floor have decorated the whole floor with stickers of rabbits and easter eggs. the excitement is quite contagious and i hope the kids have lot of fun and eat a lot of chocolate =)

look before you leap
my sister and my brother in law were visiting me on the weekend. I have never lived in an apt which has an outside fire escape and frankly its a bit scary looking. (the fire escape in old apt buildings in nyc is equivalent to a winding staircase outside the apt window)
so this is just before dohr ki namaz when im wearing my dupatta (head scarf). this is a more have to be there kinda moment but watever.
b-in-law opening the window: h do you know you have a fire escape
me: yea
bil: you are supposed to use this as an exit during the fire
me: yea, i know. *considering my fear of heights i would probably risk being burnt than climbing down the fire escape*
bil: so how about doing a demo
me: yea sure.*sarcastically* imagine me coming out the window wearing my white duppata. the next thing you know pple on the street will freak out and the police will be here in seconds.
bil: *laughing* yea i can imagine the headlines on TV "al qaeda's wife caught in new york coming down the fire escape"
me: *laughing* yea but u know al qaeda is not actually a single person.
bil: true, but that h is US media for you.

and this is how you remind me
conversations of the day(s):
it was my sisters birthday and i wanted to buy chicken pastries. i go into a local bakery store
me: Excuse me, do you have chicken pastries?
guy no 1: huh *calls guy no 2*
guy no 2: u want chicken pastries?
me: yes
guy no 2: we dont have. they have at the indian store. are u indian?
me: yes, i am. are u indian?
guy no 2: *with an offended look* no im bangladeshi.
a great big of a deal. jeez. its all the same to me. well, maybe not. especially after the world cup debacle, no one wants to be mistaken as indian.
after seeing an apt which, i kid you not, had the kitchen inside the closet. imagine opening a closet and finding a kitchinette. just to get an idea of the neighbourhood i ask this elderly man coming out of the apt how the area is and how the building is
man: this building has given me high blood pressure and stress.
me: oh god, why?
man: too much noise i cant sleep at the nite
me: is traffic that bad
man: no not traffic, neighbours. they make too much noise
me: i see, thats tough.
man: a muslim lives on top of me and at 4 oclock makes too much noise.
me: hmm
man: so where are you from?
me: im indian.
man : oh indian. indian doctors did my nose job and my ears. so polite. indian doctors very good. so are you a doctor?
me: no im not.
i make only 1 out of the 3 criteria. i guess i wouldnt fit the bill of being the ideal neighbour.

there is one thing i have noticed. hardly any desis will live in manhattan. and yes, they CAN afford it. but they dont. perhaps, they are smart and they know they should NOT be paying an arm and a leg (add a few toes from your other leg for good measure) just so they can sleep a few more mins. that too for a 100 year old pigeon hole (not even a new pigeon hole). and im not kidding about the 100 year old building. they renovate it a little, add an elevator to the building a doorman and that automatically bumps the price to a thousand bucks (in USD much more). but instead if you have a five story walk up (ie only stairs) and your apt is on the 5th floor, you can easily end up with a fit body and a fat pocket. (i.e minus a 1000 bucks) after a few days you learn fast and you realize the almost too good to be true deal is truly too good to be true.
neway, if you really want to move into a decent place in manhtatan which is in a more commutable area i.e near the trains. you have to go to a broker. they control the whole real estate market. im not sure how it works for a 2 bedroom apt, but for a studio if someone tells you they found a decent place without a broker near transportation, they are either lieing or have been lied to.
some days ago, we had gone to see an apt listed on craigslist which seemed too good to be true. many of the times pple will list their apts and leave out relevant information : lease term/etc. this ad actually had a picture of the apt, in a high rise building, with a doorman and elevator. and it was opposite the lcoal supermarket. so we called the broker and hounded him for an appointment. when we got there, the broker was this recent graduate been on the job 3 months ago.
